Re~Cycle
Re~Cycle – bicycle aid for Africa
Re~Cycle is a UK charity committed to providing cheap, sustainable transport in Africa. For many people, a bicycle can be a first step out of poverty and towards a better life, giving people opportunities to travel to work and school.
Re~Cycle support a wide variety of grass-roots projects all over Africa, as well as running events and initiatives to recycle bikes within the UK.
They take unwanted bikes from individuals and organisations such as Royal Mail, check them over and send them to various partner organisations in Africa. There, they are refurbished before being distributed by African partners. They also teach repair and maintenance skills to locals to ensure the bikes can be repaired and to provide employment. To date Re~Cycle has sent 100 shipments of bikes to Africa, totalling more than 36,000 bikes!
We have been helping Re~Cycle here in London prior to our departure. On our way through Africa we will visit a number of the communities that have received bikes from Re~Cycle to see how they have changed peoples’ lives. We also hope to discover new partners and opportunities to assist this UK based charity to set up new community-led projects.
How you can help:
- Sponsor us!! We hope to fundraise £1500 for Re~Cycle by doing various challenges en route. Check out our JustGiving sponsorship page for more details and to donate to the cause. Why not suggest a challenge for us to do!
- Donate a bike! Or bike parts, bike tools, maintenance tools, manuals, consumables, etc.
- Fundraise for Re~cycle yourself. Re~cycle need financial donations to ship the bikes to Africa, and also for tools and equipment to prepare and repair the bikes, and to train cycle mechanics in Africa to ensure sustainability of this venture.
